CAMERA OBSCURA

Colin White, Chair of Friends of the Friarwood Valley Gardens says… “We believe that it is the largest permanent pinhole camera in existence and the experience of being inside the totally dark interior and then exposing a small aperture to allow a small beam of light to enter is a unique experience. At school I learnt about the physics of light theoretically from drawings whereas our pinhole camera allows physical experience of how light behaves. We are also able to expose light sensitive paper to produce permanent images, in other words, photographs. The pinhole camera was of course the origin of photography.

“The pinhole camera has been used for centuries by artists to draw landscapes, because like photographs, true perspective is recorded”.
